To make this more interesting trekking in the Apuan Alps, to the members who participate, I will give some information that may be used to better understand the environment that surrounds us .
The Tuscan Apennine dividing the Versilia Garfagnana and Lunigiana is the magnificent Alps Apuan. The adjective takes its name from the Apuan people who lived in these places, the Ligurian Apuani.
This region is one of the most extraordinary of the world, both for the beauty of the landscape for the many ravages wrought by more than 2,000 years by the man who operates the exploitation of the veins of marble, which are among the most valuable of the entire globe.
These mountains, although lower, are to join the Alpine areas of its nature, rugged ridges, huge chasms and gullies smoothed by water erosion and wind. The many paths found in these mountains were born in the millennia to the needs of the people, either for reasons that work for family needs. Most of them were miners, and when there were no existing modes of transport, to move the tons of marble from the hills towards the valley floor, they did so on the "ways of competing, steep paths carved into the rock. The marble blocks were placed on tree trunks and governed by several ropes to be lowered only by force of arms by hundreds of men, thing were constantly wet with water, and the logs that the strings. You can imagine the danger of that work and numerous injuries and deaths that the work demanded.
The Alps have originated in the Middle Triassic, therefore birth older Apennines. There are of sedimentary origin formed in the marine environment.
In these mountains, and specifically in the Monte Corchia, is the largest of the Italian caves, about 50 km of tunnels and shafts, it is called "Cave of Corchia" paradise of the cave . We on the second day we will reach the peak of Pania della Croce, one of the most popular mountains for hikers, coming down the opposite side to the Valley of Hell, and then spun from the channel where we'll find another paradise of the cave, the "Vetricia" plateau scattered limestone of caves and chasms, at first glance seem to be a lunar landscape. You can find "the Abyss Revel" whose entrance has a width of several tens of meters to communicate with an abyss of 300 meters. The first descent into the abyss was in 1931 by the "Group Speleological Fiorentino. Among the caves for tourists is the "Wind Cave" in the area of Fornovolasco and "The Cave of Corchia" in the area of Levigliani.
The Alps do not have very high peaks, no longer than 2,000 meters, the highest is Mount Pisanino which rises to 1,946 meters.
